Kenya Kwanza supporters in Kakamega town on September 5, celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision of upholding William Ruto’s win in the just concluded general elections.

The supporters stormed Kakamega town carrying a banana stem on top of an old wooden wheelbarrow with Raila’s photo pinned on it as a symbol of the Azimio flagbearer’s journey back to Bondo after the loss.

The residents, who cast their votes in favour of the president-elect, expressed their joy with the verdict that was delivered by the Supreme Court President Lady Justice Martha Koome saying that their decision to vote for Ruto had been vindicated.

They however called on the President-elect to honour his promise to the people of the Western region by allowing 30 per cent representation of his government to come from the region as it had been agreed in the pre-election pact.

“Our president, kindly honour what you pledged to us, we want a ministerial post from western Kenya”, one supporter said.

Ruto was declared to have won the just concluded general election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, a decision that was contested by a petition in the apex court by his closest rival Raila Odinga who came second.

Raila had sought several prayers in the Supreme Court due to alleged election malpractice and breach of law in the electioneering exercise.

However, in the ruling that was delivered today, the court dismissed all seven consolidated petitions for lack of substantive evidence and asked each party to bare their own costs.
