EPRA reduces fuel prices in latest review

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new fuel prices for April to May 14, 2024.

In a statement shared on Sunday, April 14, 2024, EPRA announced the price reduction of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene by Ksh5.31 per litre, Ksh10.00 per litre and Ksh18.68 per litre respectively.

“In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump price for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene decreased by KShs.5.31 per litre, KShs.10.00 per litre and KShs.18.68 per litre respectively.

“The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020,” EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo said.

With the new price changes, Super Petrol will retail at Ksh193.84, Diesel Ksh 180.38 whereas Kerosene will retail at Ksh170.06 in Nairobi. This is from the previous Ksh199.15, Ksh190.38 and Ksh188.74 for Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene respectively.

In Mombasa, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Ksh190.66, Ksh177.21 and Ksh166.99 respectively.

In Nakuru, Super Petrol will retail at Ksh192.90, Diesel Ksh179.82 whereas Kerosene will retail at Ksh169.56.

In Eldoret, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Ksh193.67, Ksh180.59 and Ksh170.32 respectively.

Similarly, in Kisumu, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will be priced at Ksh193.66, Ksh180.59, and Ksh170.31 respectively.

Fuel prices are highest in distant areas such as Nakalale, Lokichogio, Lokitaung, Korr, Turbi, Loyangalani, Kalacha, Maikona, and North Horr where Super Petrol will now retail at Ksh201.06, Ksh201.14, Ksh202.07, Ksh200.27, Ksh202.26, Ksh202.46, Ksh202.40, Ksh201.81 and Ksh203.30 respectively.

“The average landed cost for imported Super Petrol increased by 4.86% from USD703.49 per cubic metre in February 2024 USD737.69 per cubic metre in March 2024, Diesel increased by 0.003% from USD722.49 per cubic metre to USD722.51 per cubic metre while Kerosene decreased by 0.69% from USD730.35 per cubic metre to USD725.31 per cubic metre,” Kiptoo added.

The latest comes hours after President William Ruto assured Kenyans that the cost of the essential commodity would be reduced significantly.

Ruto who was speaking during a church service in Nyeri on Sunday, April 14, 2024, said the prices will drop by Ksh10.

“Today maize flour was nearing Ksh200 it’s now close to Ksh100. The dollar was Ksh160 now it’s a hundred and twenty-something and still not done. Oil prices as you have seen have dropped with Ksh10 today…because we are making the right decisions not the right decisions and Kenya is going to go forward. This nation will change for the better,” the president said.
