Kaz Lucas reveals why her mum warned her against getting married

Singer Kaz Lucas has opened up about her mother’s experience in an abusive marriage and how it shaped her views on relationships.
Lucas said her mother strongly disliked men after what she went through and warned her against getting married. She explained that the advice stayed with her because her mother was very specific about her views on marriage.
“My mom was in a very abusive marriage. She hated men; on her dying day she hated men, she was just like, don’t get married. She was so specific,” Kaz Lucas said while talking to Adelle on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Lucas explained that her mother’s views were connected to her own experience of marriage. She said her mother had always wanted a child but did not want marriage. Lucas also recalled that she had a feeling her mother was going to die, making the memory of her final days even more difficult for her.

“It is kind of sad, but I had a feeling my mom was going to die. She always wanted a kid; she never wanted marriage,” Kaz Lucas said.
Kaz Lucas on marriage in her family
Lucas said her mother’s experience was not the only example of difficult marriages she saw while growing up. She explained that several women in her family had gone through divorce. According to Lucas, her aunties also had different experiences with marriage and relationships.
“All the women in my life, my aunties, all of them are divorced. Every single one of them. Except the ones that died, or their husbands died,” Kaz Lucas said.

Lucas explained that one of her aunties is currently in her third marriage. She said these experiences gave her a different view of marriage and the expectations that can come with it. Her family history also influenced how she understood relationships as she grew older.
Lucas also reflected on how her experiences differed from those of her cousins. She said she noticed that her cousins appeared to live within a more conventional lifestyle. Lucas explained that she did not feel the same pressure to follow that path.
“I do realise that I experienced something from my cousins; I feel like they live in a conformative lifestyle and I feel like I didn’t get the same pressure,” Kaz Lucas said.
She explained that she grew up seeing different outcomes from relationships and did not experience the same pressure she felt her cousins faced. Her mother’s warning also remained part of how she viewed marriage.
