A mother of one who had dug a hole in her bedroom to hide bhang has been sentenced to serve one year of community service.

However, her husband who is on the run has been sentenced to serve two years imprisonment without an option of a fine.

Amina Abdi Kiyo and her husband Francis Mwenda were convicted of drug peddling by Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi.

The magistrate said the couple wanted to outwit police but they were beaten by the crime busters who exhumed the drugs from the floor of their four-bedroom house in Isiolo county.

Convicting the accused persons, magistrate Ochoi condemned the act saying drugs pose a great danger to the youth and society in general.

The magistrate noted that the couple should be at the forefront of protecting the children.

The couple had been arrested from their Isiolo home after police discovered a hole inside their bedroom where they use to hide the drug in a sack.

The 2131 grams of bhang with a street value of Ksh63,930 had been wrapped in a purple polythene bag.

The magistrate said courts will not sit pretty and watch the society being wasted by the the likes of the accused who have no sympathies with the well-being of the youth and vulnerable groups.

Ochoi however extended mercy to Amina saying that she was remorseful and was keeping the “parcel” for her husband whom she said had told her that they were material for his business.

Chief defends Amina against bhang trafficking

In the probation report, a chief spoke well of Amina saying she is innocent and has never been reported engaging in criminal activities.

For her husband, Mwenda, who is on the run, the magistrate sentenced him in absentia and issued a warrant for his arrest.

“Mwenda will serve two years in jail from when he is going to be arrested by anti-narcotic police,” Ochoi ordered.

Amina was directed to report to the probation office in Isiolo for guidance and counselling.

He will also do community work for one year under the supervision of Kina police station.
