FKF NEC calls for urgent action to end 2026/27 season impasse

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Executive Committee (NEC) members have called for immediate action by the federation to resolve the impasse surrounding the delayed 2026/27 season and address what they describe as pressing governance challenges.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the NEC members said the current situation had created uncertainty among clubs, players, coaches, officials and other stakeholders, arguing that a sustainable football structure must be supported by functioning institutions, predictable regulations and accessible dispute-resolution mechanisms.
The NEC members said achievements recorded by the federation should not take precedence over the immediate governance and operational issues affecting Kenyan football.
Court battles
On the ongoing court battles, the NEC members rejected calls for football disputes to be kept away from the Judiciary, saying FKF itself had previously taken football matters to ordinary courts.
They cited the Nairobi United FC versus Gor Mahia FC case as an example and argued that the federation should apply the same standards to itself and its stakeholders.
“The solution is therefore not to ask the Judiciary to stay away from football,” the statement said, adding that FKF must comply with existing court directives and restore certainty to the football calendar.
The NEC members also raised concerns over the failure to operationalise FKF’s internal judicial and dispute-resolution bodies.
According to the statement, the absence of functioning internal mechanisms has left members with limited avenues for resolving grievances and has contributed to the growing number of disputes being taken to external institutions, including the courts.
They said restoring credible and independent internal judicial mechanisms was necessary to address the governance challenges facing the federation.
The status of the Acting General Secretary/CEO was another issue raised by the NEC members.
They disputed the assertion that the office holder remains lawfully in position pending the determination of a petition involving the former General Secretary, arguing that the six-month acting appointment had expired and had not been lawfully extended by the NEC.
The NEC members further pointed to notices issued in August and September calling NEC meetings where extension of the acting tenure was listed as an agenda item.
They argued that this was inconsistent with the position that the tenure could continue without a formal extension.
Call for dialogue
On dialogue, the NEC members welcomed the President’s call for engagement but said any talks should be properly structured and conducted through established institutional processes.
They also rejected the suggestion that there had been four unsuccessful attempts to engage NEC members, saying they remained ready to attend a properly convened meeting provided it follows the FKF Constitution and established governance procedures.
The statement further raised concerns about the integrity of NEC deliberations and minutes, with members alleging previous instances in which concerns were raised over the alteration or manipulation of meeting records.
They said NEC members should have confidence that decisions reached collectively would be accurately and faithfully reflected in official minutes.
As a way forward, the NEC members proposed two immediate actions.
First, they called on the FKF President to convene a properly constituted NEC meeting within the constitutional timelines to deliberate on three priority issues: the commencement and conclusion dates and framework for the 2026/27 season; the establishment and operationalisation of the federation’s judicial bodies; and the lawful appointment of a competent Acting General Secretary/CEO.
Second, they called for the immediate and orderly commencement of all FKF competitions for the 2026/27 season.
The NEC members said the competitions should be conducted in accordance with the FKF Constitution, applicable regulations, the 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations, and existing court directives.
They also stressed that the commencement of the league could not be separated from compliance with rules governing promotion and relegation.
The statement comes amid the continuing uncertainty over the start of the new Kenyan football season, with the NEC members urging the federation to prioritise institutional stability, compliance with court directives and the restoration of a predictable football calendar.
