YY: If everyone is supposed to be on the same side, what is the point of elections?

Comedian YY, who challenged the idea of people being expected to support the same side during an election days after he went out boldly to showcase development progress under President William Ruto’s administration.
He said elections are meant to allow people to have their own choices and opinions.
YY explained that people should not expect others to choose the same person simply because they have made their own choice. He used a simple example to question why someone would want to make a personal choice while also expecting another person to follow that choice.
“Between you and me, who would you choose? Of course you would choose you. Now the problem is that you will choose you, but you also want me to choose you. So who chooses me?” YY said on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
He said that expecting another person to support the same choice takes away their chance to make their own decision. YY questioned whether such expectations amount to greed, especially when one person wants to have their own opinion while also asking others to follow it.
“If you want to choose you, and I also have to choose you, are you not greedy? Isn’t that greed surely?” YY said.
Elections and personal opinions
YY further questioned the idea of people being expected to agree with one another during elections. He said every person should have the freedom to make their own choice instead of being pushed to follow another person’s opinion.
He explained that having a different opinion does not mean that someone should be forced to remain silent simply because their views could upset other people. According to YY, people should be able to express what they believe.
“You want to have your own opinion, and you want me to follow yours blindly and not to have mine; where does my opinion go?” YY said.
He said he draws the line at situations where people are expected to keep quiet because their views might offend others. YY maintained that people should be allowed to hold and express different opinions rather than being expected to agree with everyone around them.
“Keeping quiet because there are people that will be offended by an opinion is where I draw the line,” YY said.
He also used the exchange between two people to show the difference between making one’s own choice and expecting someone else to make the same choice. YY said the same principle should apply when people have different opinions during elections.
