The death of South African midfielder Jayden Adams has left the football world in mourning, with fans, teammates and officials paying tribute to the 25-year-old while police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Adams, who represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup just weeks before his death, was found dead on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at a property in the Schotsche Kloof neighbourhood of Cape Town.

His death has sparked widespread grief as well as speculation on social media, prompting authorities and his family to urge the public to wait for official findings.

Police continue investigation

Cape Town police have opened an inquest into Adams’ death and say investigations are ongoing.

In a statement to the Associated Press on Monday, July 13, 2026, police confirmed that officers responded after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered on Saturday morning.

“Cape Town central police registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” the statement read.

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death, and no foul play has been confirmed or ruled out. An autopsy is being conducted to determine what happened, with police urging the public and media to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.

Family seeks privacy

Adams’ father, Juanito Adams, described the loss as devastating, saying the family is still struggling to come to terms with his sudden death.

“As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it. It won’t be easy to carry on. People say it will become easier, but it won’t. You just learn to live with it,” he told South African broadcaster eNCA.

He also thanked football fans around the world for the outpouring of support.

“The whole world is reacting to Jayden’s death. As I said, it’s very tough. We can see the love the world had for his soccer and for Jayden.”

The family has not announced funeral arrangements and is waiting for the results of the post-mortem examination.

Adams’ partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, has also shared emotional tributes on social media, remembering him while avoiding speculation over his death.

Calls for restraint

Adams’ passing came shortly after he helped Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998. He featured in all three group-stage matches and was widely praised for his performances throughout the tournament.

As rumours spread online about the circumstances surrounding his death, South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie appealed for compassion and patience.

“Exercise restraint and compassion, and refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time,” he said.

His club, Mamelodi Sundowns, described him as a remarkable footballer. At the same time, the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and several coaches paid tribute to his contribution to the game. Moments of silence were also observed during World Cup quarter-final matches.

With the autopsy and police investigation still underway, authorities have stressed that any claims circulating online remain unverified, urging the public to rely only on official updates as the inquiry continues.
