Newcastle coach Jaissle warns ‘we will see many penalties’ after defeat to Liverpool

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle has revealed his disappointment after his team were pegged back from an opening Premier League victory by Liverpool in Sunday’s (August 23, 2026) clash at St James’ Park.
Speaking after the match, the new gaffer was left to rue the referee’s decision to award Víctor Muñoz a stoppage-time spot-kick after the Spaniard went down inside the area with scores at 2-1 in favour of his team.
Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up to beat Czech Republic’s young keeper Hornicek, sealing a dramatic end to the game, a call that left the coach unamused.
‘Not a penalty’
According to the former Saudi Pro League coach, such a call forms a basis for many other softer penalty calls being given if the case becomes a precedent.
“For me, it was no penalty—it was a really soft one. If you give that, we will see many, many penalties. I don’t think that Lewis can do anything else; he cannot just disappear on the field,” he added.
Jaissle on Newcastle’s performance
He also registered his pleasure with the performance of his charges, terming it a start they can build on.
“There is also some brightness, definitely, because the guys were doing an amazing job for over 90 minutes. We are a young squad and they really left their hearts on the pitch, and this is something we can build on. I was pleased with their performance too; they did it at a high level.”
Big challenge
The coach, who is among the many tacticians making their Premier League debut following a massive wave of managerial changes across top English clubs, further expressed optimism regarding Newcastle’s chances in the league
“I am enjoying it already. I saw the young lads fighting for everything. There was commitment. A good synergy with the fans. This is special; it is going to be a really cool season with big challenges as well. We are realistic, but we will go there.
