Akonnor explains why Gor Mahia’s win over Al Hilal is crucial ahead of new season

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has stated that he could not be prouder of his charges after stunning Sudanese giants Al Hilal to reach the CECAFA Kagame Cup final on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Speaking post-match, the Ghanaian tactician framed the victory within the club’s broader ambitions, noting that outplaying a CAF Champions League regular was a clear hallmark of a top-tier side.
“The feeling is good. We didn’t allow them to play the way they intended and made life difficult for them. Tactically, we were sound and positive. I am proud of these boys.
“They were aware that they were not just playing for Gor Mahia but for the entire Kenyan nation. We represent Kenya, and we can only be proud of them,” Akonnor said.
Bright future
He also hailed the team spirit and resilience shown when K’Ogalo were reduced to ten men.
“We showed character when we went down to ten men. We remained composed and displayed real grit. I am happy with their performance; it is the mark of a good team,” he added.
The tactical mastermind noted that the victory points to a squad that is steadily improving, a trajectory he stated bodes well for their future ambitions as they angle for a return to the CAF Champions League after claiming the domestic championship.
“The future is bright for this team, and going forward, we hope things will continue to improve. We know we have a massive continental competition ahead of us. For us to go toe-to-toe with established teams like Al-Hilal, compete, and test ourselves against them, that means we have achieved something. Even if we had lost on penalties, I would still be incredibly proud of my team.”

The result also elicited praise from FKF boss Hussein Mohammed, who termed it a proud moment for the country.

For their efforts, Gor now seeks to end an over four-decade wait for the regional trophy when they face Rayon Sports in the final on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Kigali.
