The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a weather alert, warning residents in several counties to prepare for rain showers and thunderstorms on Monday, December 15, 2025.

The alert, issued on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., comes as part of the daily weather forecast, which highlights varying weather conditions across the country.

Highlands and Rift Valley

According to the forecast, parts of the South East Lowlands, Highlands East, and areas west of the Rift Valley will experience rainfall, with showers expected in the morning and afternoon.

The Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley counties, including Kakamega, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, and Bomet, are likely to see showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours.

Nairobi, Mt Kenya and Northern counties

Residents in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi, should also expect rain and thunderstorms, with light showers possible during the morning and more widespread rainfall in the afternoon.

Northern counties such as Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera are forecast to experience partly cloudy conditions, with sunny intervals and a small chance of localised showers in the afternoon.

South Eastern lowlands and coast

The South Eastern Lowlands, Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta are expected to receive scattered showers, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.

Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River, are expected to have partly cloudy skies, with sunny intervals throughout the day.

Kenya Met has advised residents in affected areas to exercise caution, especially on roads prone to flooding.

Lightning strikes and strong winds may also occur in areas experiencing thunderstorms, so precautions should be taken to avoid accidents and property damage.

Sunrise and sunset times across major towns are expected to remain consistent, with Nairobi seeing sunrise at 6:21 a.m. and sunset at 6:33 p.m., while Mombasa will have sunrise at 6:05 a.m. and sunset at 6:27 p.m.

The department continues to monitor the situation and advises residents to stay updated through its official social media platforms and website for any changes in the forecast.
