Water disruptions hit several Nairobi estates as a major burst affects supply

Several parts of Nairobi County are experiencing a water supply interruption on Friday, May 1, 2026, following a major burst on the NCT–Kigoro–Gigiri–Kabete transmission pipeline at Gigiri.

In a notice on Friday, May 1, 2026, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company confirmed the disruption. The company announced the burst has disrupted supply to all areas served by the Kabete Reservoirs, which feed a wide corridor of the city’s western and southern neighbourhoods through multiple distribution pipelines.

“We wish to inform the public of a temporary water supply interruption affecting several residential and commercial areas in the city, following a major burst on the NCT–Kigoro–Gigiri–Kabete transmission pipeline at Gigiri,” the Nairobi Water’s statement read in part.

Affected areas

The interruption covers a broad stretch of the city. Areas along Waiyaki Way and the Westlands corridor (including Lavington, Kilimani, and Kileleshwa) are affected, as are residents along Upperhill and Ngong Road.

Further south, Madaraka, Nairobi West, Uthiru, Karen, Kibera, and Lang’ata estates are also without supply. Hospitals and commercial establishments within these zones are equally affected.

Restoration and interim measures

Repair works are currently underway, with teams from the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) and Nairobi Water deployed at the burst site. AWWDA is the state agency responsible for bulk water infrastructure across the Nairobi region.

Water supply is expected to resume by 6:00 am on Saturday, May 2, 2026. In the meantime, Nairobi Water urges residents to use available water sparingly.

For priority needs, the company’s bowser (water tanker) services remain available. Customers can request and pay for a bowser by dialling *260# and selecting option 5.

Nairobi Water adds that it continues to uphold water quality and public health standards throughout the restoration process, and asks residents to monitor its official channels for updates on the supply timeline.

This comes amid heavy rainfall being witnessed in several parts of the country.
