Tuesday weather: Showers, thunderstorms set to dominate most parts of the country

Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast that most parts of the country will experience showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

According to its daily forecast, Rainfall is expected to continue across the country, particularly in the highlands, Rift Valley, Nairobi, and south-eastern lowlands.

Counties to expect rainfall


In the highlands west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, counties including Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, and Narok are expected to see showers and thunderstorms. Morning sunny intervals will give way to afternoon rainfall.

Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nyeri, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Nairobi, will also experience afternoon showers and thunderstorms following brief morning sunny intervals.

The south-eastern lowlands, covering Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado, will see similar patterns, with showers and thunderstorms dominating the afternoon after morning sunny intervals.

Sunshine


Parts of north-western Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu counties, are expected to have mostly sunny intervals, though strong southeasterly winds of above 25 knots may occur in Turkana.

North-eastern counties, including Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Isiolo, will also enjoy sunny intervals, with strong southeasterly winds in Marsabit.

The coastal region, covering Mombasa, Malindi, Lamu, Kilifi, and Tana River, is forecasted to have mainly sunny intervals, though brief afternoon showers are possible.

Temperatures

Maximum temperatures will range from 22°C in Kericho to 38°C in Lodwar. Nairobi is expected to reach a high of 27°C with afternoon showers and thunderstorms, while Kisii, Nakuru, and Machakos will see similar patterns.

Other cities such as Eldoret, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Malindi, Mombasa, and Lamu will experience scattered rainfall or brief sunny intervals.

The KMD has advised residents to monitor updates, particularly in areas expecting afternoon showers and thunderstorms, and to exercise caution.
