Thika: Kenyans forced to act after man pours petrol over himself and tries to set himself ablaze

Kenyans were forced to intervene on Sunday, August 30, 2026, after a man doused himself in petrol at a popular city park and attempted to strike a match as he sought to end his life.

In a video shared on TikTok on Monday, August 31, 2026, by user @kenya_comrades, the man, dressed in a red T-shirt, is seen pouring an entire can of petrol over himself before making frantic attempts to light a matchbox.

The alarming scene instantly threw the park into turmoil as women and children who had been relaxing on the grass nearby scrambled to safety, while others hurriedly whisked their children away as the man repeatedly struggled to ignite the match.

The tense situation escalated within moments as those nearby watched the man continue fumbling with the matchbox, apparently determined to set himself ablaze despite the growing commotion around him.

The man, however, did not succeed, as a quick-thinking bystander suddenly lunged at him and wrestled the matchbox from his hands before pinning him to the ground and reprimanding him over the dangerous act.

The video captures the two men grappling on the ground as the man in the red T-shirt appears to resist efforts to restrain him, while other people keep their distance from the unfolding drama.

Those who had been chilling at the park were subsequently seen abandoning the area in a hurry, with many apparently fearing that the situation could turn catastrophic if the man managed to strike the match and ignite the petrol covering his body.

The dramatic intervention ultimately prevented the situation from escalating further, as the bystander remained determined to keep the man restrained and away from the matchbox.

In a related development, activist Julius Kamau staged a dramatic protest on Monday, August 17, 2026, when he chained himself to the gates of Jogoo House in Nairobi while demanding greater accountability from the National Police Service.

Kamau was leading a group of activists who had gathered outside the offices of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, with the protesters calling for his resignation over concerns surrounding police brutality, deaths in custody and reported cases of abductions.

The activist’s decision to chain himself to the gates immediately transformed the demonstration into a dramatic confrontation, forcing police officers to intervene as he remained attached to the entrance of the police headquarters.

Footage from the scene showed Kamau engaged in a heated confrontation with police officers as he remained chained to the gates, with officers eventually moving in and whisking him away from the premises.

The protest also centred on recent events in Homa Bay, with the activists demanding answers over what they described as growing concerns about police conduct, accountability and the treatment of members of the public.

Police reportedly moved to stop the protesters from addressing the media, with at least six activists arrested during the confrontation as officers sought to bring the demonstration under control.

Kamau, however, remained defiant during the standoff, insisting that he was prepared to go to extreme lengths in his fight for what he described as the rights of Kenyans.

“Siogopi bana, niko tayari kufa nikipigania Wakenya,” Kamau said.
