Shocking revelation of degree holders topping list of scammed Kenyans

The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline Njogu has dropped a shocking revelation, stating that educated Kenyans with the equivalent of a degree are the most vulnerable victims of overseas fraud that dangles job opportunities or better deals abroad.

Speaking to a local radio station on Monday, March 2, 2026, the Diaspora Affairs PS stated that the majority of victims erroneously believe they are somewhat immune to being scammed, backed by their level of knowledge and education.

“Many victims are people who have gone to the university and are holders of a degree. Normally, they have a sense of belief that they cannot be scammed,” she stated.

The government official lamented that despite the government’s strict guardrails and outreach programs to avert such situations, most people still choose the wide path with disastrous consequences.

Personal responsibility

While underscoring the need to cross-check information and engage only official channels when moving abroad, she also challenged Kenyans to embrace a sense of personal responsibility if things go wrong—especially in cases where they fail to engage scrupulous agencies.

“What breaks my heart is that we will always talk to these people and ask them, ‘Did you know your agent was not licensed?’ They admit and say, ‘I knew, but I wanted to see it for myself.’ They have deliberately chosen to walk the wide path, believing it will yield something good, and only come back to seek government intervention after the worst has happened,” she added.

Plans for evacuations

On the ongoing conflict in Middle Eastern countries, Njogu has stated that the government is far from beginning evacuation efforts, noting that they might reach that stage if the need arises.

However, she added that the government is in communication with ambassadors on the ground to ascertain the real situation in the various countries. She urged individuals to note that the call for evacuation has not yet been issued.

“I have received a lot of information and calls from Kenyans who were on their way to various destinations and are now grounded. We have been in communication with our ambassadors in the affected countries, and each mission has its own evacuation plans. Kenyans should check with their respective embassies to get the latest information provided,” she added.
