Saturday weather: Met Department forecasts rain, thunderstorms in several counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across several parts of the country on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
In its daily weather forecast issued on Friday, August 7, 2026, the weather department said rainfall is expected in parts of western Kenya, the Rift Valley, Central Kenya, eastern regions and the Coast during the forecast period.
Several counties are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon, with western and Rift Valley areas likely to record moderate rainfall in some places.
In Trans-Nzoia, the forecast indicates moderate showers and thunderstorms in several places, while Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nakuru, Kericho and Kakamega are also expected to receive moderate showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon.
“Moderate showers and thunderstorms several places” are forecast in Trans-Nzoia, while Uasin Gishu is expected to experience “moderate showers and thunderstorms expected several places,” according to the forecast.
Bungoma is also expected to receive moderate showers and thunderstorms in several areas, while Vihiga could experience light showers and thunderstorms in a few places.
Cool and cloudy conditions
The meteorological department has also forecast intermittent cool and cloudy conditions in parts of Central and eastern Kenya, including Nairobi.
“Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado counties,” the department said.
The forecast indicates that several of these areas could experience cloudy conditions in the morning before sunny intervals later in the day.
Coastal region
Coastal counties will experience partly cloudy conditions, with chances of light showers in some areas.
In Mombasa, temperatures are expected to range between 21°C and 29°C, with sunny intervals during the day and light showers possible in a few places during the afternoon.
The forecast agency expects Mombasa to experience “partly cloudy” conditions at night, followed by “sunny intervals” in the morning and “sunny intervals, light showers over a few places” in the afternoon.
Kilifi is expected to receive light showers in a few places before conditions improve to sunny intervals, while Lamu could experience sunny intervals with light showers in a few places during the afternoon.
Strong winds
The weather department has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds in parts of northern, eastern and coastal Kenya.
“Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) [are] expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties,” the agency said.
The affected areas stretch from northern Kenya to parts of the Coast, where residents could experience windy conditions during the forecast period.
Temperatures
Temperatures will vary significantly across the country, with Mandera expected to record the highest maximum temperature at 35°C.
Garissa is forecast to reach 33°C, while Wajir could record 32°C. Mombasa is expected to record a maximum of 29°C and a minimum of 21°C.
In Nairobi, temperatures are forecast to range between 14°C and 23°C, while Nyandarua could record some of the coolest conditions, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 22°C.
The forecast is valid from 9:00 pm on Friday, August 7, to 9:00 pm on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
