Ruto pays tribute to Cyrus Jirongo as fearless political trailblazer
President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his friend and former Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) and cabinet secretary, Cyrus Jirongo.
The late politician died on Saturday morning, December 13, 2025, following a road accident in the Karai area, Naivasha, Nakuru County, at around 3 a.m. Jirongo was a widely respected figure in Kenyan politics and a former Minister for Rural Development.

In a heartfelt message on his social media on Saturday, December 13, 2025, Ruto described Jirongo as a relentless go-getter, a seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician who refused to be defined or defeated by life’s challenges.
The President highlighted Jirongo’s character, noting that he was a fighter in every sense – blunt yet warm, bold yet approachable, enlightened, and endlessly entrepreneurial.

Ruto also praised Jirongo’s generosity, saying he was always willing to give, uplift others, and support them with his time, resources, and belief.

Ruto reflected on Jirongo’s fearless approach to life, noting that he never shied away from taking a tough stand or pursuing ambitious ideas. He added that Jirongo lived on his own terms and left an indelible mark on Kenya’s political landscape.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, my friend,” Ruto concluded.

Cyrus Jirongo shared a close political alliance with President William Ruto during the early stages of their careers.
Both were key figures in the Youth for KANU (YK 92) movement in the early 1990s, which played a crucial role in securing President Daniel Moi’s re-election in the country’s first multiparty elections in 1992.
Within the movement, Jirongo chaired a team that included Ruto, who served as treasurer, along with other notable figures.
Political leaders mourn
Prominent Kenyan leaders have also expressed their grief over the passing of Cyrus Jirongo. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen described Jirongo as a feisty political organiser and astute businessman, sending his thoughts and prayers to the late MP’s family, friends, and everyone who knew him.
Opposition leader and Wiper Party head Kalonzo Musyoka mourned Jirongo as a bold and charismatic leader whose fearless approach to public life left a lasting mark on the nation.
Musyoka extended his condolences on behalf of his family and the Wiper Party to Jirongo’s family, friends, and the people of Kakamega County and Western Kenya, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka mourned the late MP, saying, “Death has robbed us of one of our greatest sons.
