Rain and cold spells persist: Kenya Met issues five-day forecast valid for August 20-24

Kenyans should prepare for mixed weather patterns across various parts of the country over the coming days.
According to the latest update issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department valid from August 20 to August 24, 2026, “rainfall is expected in several counties” as the nation experiences shifting weather conditions.
The forecast shows that chilly weather will continue to dominate the capital and surrounding areas.
In its summary, the weather agency stated that “intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nakuru and Kajiado counties”.
Nairobi residents will start Thursday, August 20, 2026, with cloudy mornings before sunny breaks later in the day. Daily maximum temperatures in the capital will range between 23°C and 27°C, while night temperatures will drop to 12°C on Thursday, August 20, 2026, and Friday, August 21, 2026.
Light morning rains will touch Nairobi on Saturday, August 22, 2026, followed by afternoon light showers through Monday, August 24, 2026.
Cold temperatures in central regions
Highland areas west and east of the Rift Valley will experience cold weather.
Nyandarua County will record the lowest temperatures nationwide, with night minimums dropping to 7°C on Friday, August 21, 2026, and 8°C on both Thursday, August 20, 2026, and Monday, August 24, 2026.

Counties such as Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Kirinyaga will see light morning rains transitioning into afternoon light showers over the weekend.
Along the coastline, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River will see light morning and afternoon showers between Friday, August 21, 2026, and Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Mombasa will hit a maximum temperature of 29°C on Saturday, August 22, 2026, while Kilifi reaches 30°C on Thursday, August 20, 2026, and Friday, August 21, 2026.
High heat in northern counties
Northern Kenya will stay hot throughout the five-day period. Turkana County will record a daily maximum temperature of 36°C through Monday, August 24, 2026.
Mandera County will also hit 36°C from Thursday, August 20, 2026, to Sunday, August 23, 2026, before settling at 35°C on Monday, August 24, 2026. Marsabit will see light morning rains on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, while Garissa expects light morning rains on Friday, August 21, 2026, and Saturday, August 22, 2026.
Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley will start most days with sunny morning breaks followed by afternoon light showers.
However, counties including Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, and Nakuru will receive moderate afternoon showers on Monday, August 24, 2026.
