Passaris schools Kenyan drivers after tragic accidents

Mourning the dead and wishing that they rest in eternal peace is not enough, and the story cannot end there.
This is after Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris came out to call a spade a spade following a string of deadly road accidents.
Through her Facebook account on Saturday, January 3, 2026, Passaris said every sober Kenyan must condemn reckless driving.
In her message, Passaris expressed deep sympathy with families affected by the tragedies at Kikopey and along the Nairobi–Mombasa Road near Konza City.
She noted that while investigations are ongoing, the recurring causes of such accidents are well known.
“What remains clear is that speeding, reckless overtaking, fatigue, and impaired driving continue to cost lives,” she stated.
A call for caution
Passaris urged motorists to slow down and exercise patience on the roads, reminding Kenyans that safety should always take priority over haste. “Let us all choose caution over haste.
“Slow down. Don’t drink and drive. Be patient on the road. Speed kills, and road safety is a shared responsibility,” she said, adding that arriving alive is always more important than arriving early.
Her remarks came as the National Transport and Safety Authority issued a detailed statement on several tragic crashes reported within the last 24 hours along major highways.
According to NTSA, one of the incidents occurred near Konza City along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway and involved a bus operated by Tahmeed Express Limited and a matatu from Naekana Route 139 Sacco.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the matatu driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision,” the authority said in part.
NTSA details crashes
Another fatal crash was reported at Kikopey along the Gilgil–Nakuru Highway, involving a matatu operated by Rift Valley Shuttle, a foreign-registered truck, and a stalled trailer.
NTSA stated that the truck failed to maintain a safe following distance, triggering a chain collision.
A third incident at Taita Village along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway involved a Janan Bus Services bus.
“Preliminary reports indicate the driver failed to keep his proper lane while overtaking and subsequently lost control,” NTSA said, noting that no fatalities were recorded in that case.
NTSA extended its condolences to bereaved families and urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially as children prepare to return to school next week.
