Panic as huge fire breaks out in Nairobi’s Mathare estate
A massive fire erupted in the Mlango Kubwa area on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, engulfing several residential structures and sending residents fleeing in panic.
Thick smoke and flames could be seen rising above the neighbourhood as people struggled to salvage belongings and escape the inferno.

Confirming the incident, the Kenya Red Cross Nairobi Branch said its emergency teams had been mobilised to support affected families and coordinate rescue operations.
“Incident Alert: A fire outbreak has been reported at the Mlango Kubwa area in Mathare, Nairobi County. The Nairobi Fire Brigade is currently on site, and efforts to extinguish the fire are underway. More updates to follow,” they said.
Security firm Securex Agencies Ltd also provided an update, stating that preliminary assessments show police and the Nairobi County Fire Brigade are on site, working to contain and extinguish the blaze.
Advisory to motorists
They warned that movement in and around the area may be affected as response operations continue, advising motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution when approaching the affected streets.
“Reports indicate that a fire has broken out in residential structures within the Mlango Kubwa area of Mathare. Preliminary assessments show that police and the Nairobi County Fire Brigade are on site, with efforts underway to contain and extinguish the blaze. Video footage shared by K24 Digital shows flames consuming multiple homes during the day, with residents desperately trying to salvage property.
Thick smoke and intense heat forced some families to flee immediately, while others attempted to control the fire before fire crews arrived.
