Orange Democratic Movement Party leader Oburu Odinga, the elder brother of the late Raila Odinga, has laughed off claims and sentiments from those wishing him death.

Speaking during a football tournament organised by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed in Migori County on Saturday, December 27, 2025, Oburu jokingly stated that he is of the same age as United States president Donald Trump, dismissing assertions that he is nearing the end of his life.

He told the crowd that anyone believing Oburu Odinga was “about to die” or “going soon” was seriously mistaken, insisting that age should not be confused with weakness or irrelevance in leadership.

Oburu compares himself to Donald Trump

Addressing supporters at the event, Oburu said he is 82 years old, the same age as Trump, whom he cited as an example of an elderly leader still actively involved in politics.

“And anybody who thinks that Oburu Odinga is about to die, that Oburu Odinga is going soon, is seriously mistaken,” he said. “I am the same age as Trump of America. Trump is also 82 years of age, as me.”

He added that age should not be used to undermine leaders who still have the strength and clarity to contribute to national affairs, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.

broad-based government arrangement

Beyond the jokes, Oburu used the platform to defend the broad-based government arrangement championed by the late Raila Odinga, saying it was the best political decision for the country at this stage.

“My people, I am telling you that this broad-based government arrangement that Raila left us is the best arrangement he could have done,” Oburu said.

He urged supporters to stay firmly within the arrangement, arguing that it offers an opportunity to move forward collectively rather than remaining in perpetual political opposition.

Oburu further stated that the current political alignment aims to ensure that by the time the 2027 General Election arrives, their supporters will be “squarely in the broad-based government.”

His remarks come amid increased political debate around succession, age, and leadership longevity, with Oburu’s comments adding a mix of humour and political messaging to the ongoing national conversation.
