Mukuru fatal shooting: Plea taking deferred pending mental examination for 2 police officers
A Nairobi High Court has deferred plea taking for two police officers, Patrick Mutunga Titus and Godwin Mwashuke Mjomba, linked with the fatal shooting of Shukri Adan Ibrahim Issaka in the Mukuru area within Nairobi County.
The two officers were scheduled for a plea taking before Makadara High Court Judge Muya Martin Mati on Monday, February 2, 2026.
However, the plea did not take place, and Judge Muya has directed that the two be subjected to a mental checkup before they plead to the murder charges against them.
Further, Judge Muya has ordered the Deputy Registrar to appoint a lawyer for Godwin Mwashuke after it emerged that he does not have counsel to represent him.
The court has also directed that the two be transferred from the Capitol Hill Police Station to the Industrial Area Prison while awaiting the test.
“I hereby order that the two officers be taken for mental assessment, the DR to appoint a lawyer for the second suspect, and they also be remanded at Industrial Area remand,” Judge Muya ordered.
According to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), they received a report of the shooting on January 11, 2026, and immediately deployed a rapid response team.
IPOA, through Senior Assistant Director of Investigations Abdrahaman Jibril, states that at around 6.10am, the deceased was intercepted by police officers within the Villa Police Station area and ordered to lie down.
Further, Jibril states that after the deceased lay down, he was shot, sustaining a single gunshot wound to the head, with the bullet exiting from the back, and died on the scene.
Later, the deceased body was taken to Takwa Mosque in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, where a post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as a penetrating gunshot injury to the head.
IPOA claims there may have been attempts to interfere with investigations, alleging that a false police report was recorded following the shooting. The authority also revealed that the officers’ mobile phones were seized and are yet to undergo forensic analysis.
The matter will be mentioned on February 17, 2026.
