Margaret Kenyatta’s presence at the event highlighted the growing support for programmes that use music to create opportunities for children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
For many families, access to music training remains out of reach due to financial challenges.
Through initiatives such as Ghetto Classics, young people are able to learn instruments, develop their talents and gain exposure through public performances.
The programme has become a source of hope for many children who dream of building a future through education and the arts.
Ghetto Classics began in Korogocho
According to the Office of the 4th and Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ghetto Classics was founded in Nairobi’s Korogocho settlement and has grown into one of Kenya’s best-known community music programmes.

The organisation uses music lessons and performance opportunities to help children build confidence, discipline and teamwork skills.
Over the years, participants have performed at major events in Kenya and beyond, showcasing the talent that exists within informal settlements and underserved communities.
