Police in Makueni are investigating a tragic incident in which a 43-year-old man is said to have hacked his wife to death before taking his own life on Thursday, December 4, 2025, night in Kalawa, Mbooni Subcounty.

Mbooni East Subcounty Police Commander Ephraim Karani said preliminary reports intimated that the assailant attacked his wife following a domestic dispute.

“The man used a knife to kill his wife before ending his own life in their living room. It has been reported to us that they had experienced domestic wrangles before,” Karani said.

Investigators recovered a note claimed to have been written by the deceased man, though its contents were not immediately disclosed.

A neighbour familiar with the incident said Mutinda is suspected of having locked the couple’s three children inside their bedroom before attacking his wife and later hanging himself in their bedroom.

He further revealed that according to the CCTV footage obtained from the building, the deceased died as she tried to jump from one balcony to another in the company of the first respondent (Kariuki Gitonga), who resides in the apartment.

The officer said that Kariuki jumped from the balcony they were in to the other, which is his, successfully, but Kathambi did not manage, leading to her falling from the 12th floor of the apartment and dying instantly.

“So, they tried to jump where they could be able to enter the balcony of the first respondent (Kariuki); after P1 jumped, the deceased followed as per the CCTV footage, and that was the last minute she was seen alive,” Officer Nyangige told the court.
