Love of my life: Charity Ngilu remembers late husband 20 years after his death

Former Governor Charity Ngilu has marked 20 years since her husband, Engineer Mwendwa Ngilu, died.

She shared a heartfelt message on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, as family members gathered to remember the man she described as the head of their family and the love of her life.

“It’s been 20 years since the head of our family, Eng. Mwendwa Ngilu, went to be with God,” Charity Ngilu said.

Ngilu, who has been passive in national politics, explained that the family came together to celebrate his life and the impact he had on those around him. Ngilu said her husband left behind a legacy that continues to be remembered many years after his passing.

“I have never seen a handsome man like my husband. We gathered today to celebrate the incredible legacy of the love of my life, an irreplaceable father and a beacon of hope to many,” she said.

“Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts,” Charity Ngilu said.

Remembering Mwendwa Ngilu

Engineer Mwendwa Ngilu died on June 30, 2006, at the age of 63 while receiving treatment at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. He had been battling diabetes before his death.

At the time, Charity Ngilu was serving as Kenya’s Minister for Health in the government of the late former President Mwai Kibaki. His passing came as a great loss to the family during her time in public service.

After his death, Mwendwa Ngilu’s body was flown back to Kenya. Family members, friends and political leaders gathered to receive him before he was laid to rest at the family’s home in Mbooni, Makueni District.

Twenty years later, Charity Ngilu’s message showed that the family continues to honour his memory. She described him as an irreplaceable father whose influence is still felt by those who knew him.

Her tribute reflected the lasting place he holds in their lives. As the family marked the anniversary of his death, Ngilu remembered him with gratitude, saying he remains in their thoughts and will always have a special place in their hearts.
