Kenya Power announces blackout in parts of Coast region on Friday, December 19

Kenya Power has informed customers that parts of the Coast region will experience a power outage on Friday, December 19 2025, following a major system disturbance at the Rabai 220/132kV substation.
In a customer alert issued on Thursday, December 18, 2025, the utility company stated that the disturbance occurred at 9:57 pm, leading to supply interruptions in most parts of the Coast region.
“POWER SUPPLY OUTAGE IN THE COAST REGION. At 9.57 p.m. tonight, a major system disturbance occurred at the Rabai 220/132kV substation, leading to supply interruption in most parts of the Coast region,” the statement read in part.
The disruption, Kenya Power noted, affected three major transmission lines connected to the substation.
These include the Isinya-Rabai 220kV, Kiambere-Rabai 132kV, and Rabai-Devki 132kV lines.
The utility company noted that the developments caused power supply disruption at the Rabai end, impacting electricity delivery across several areas.
“Consequently, power supply to three major transmission lines, the Isinya-Rabai 220kV, the Kiambere-Rabai 132kV and the Rabai-Devki 132kV lines was disrupted at the Rabai end,” it added.

Kenya Power said its technical teams are actively investigating the cause of the disturbance and working to restore supply.
It apologised to customers in the Coast region for the inconvenience caused by the outage and assured them that the matter is receiving all necessary attention.
“Our teams are working to investigate and resolve the issue. We apologise to our Coast Region customers, and we assure them that the matter is receiving all the necessary attention. Ends,” Kenya Power added.
