Kenya Met lists counties to experience rains, dry spells in July

Kenyans should prepare for different weather patterns across the country following the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The weather guide for July 2026 shows that while the month is traditionally chilly, several areas will experience warmer temperatures than usual.

Some regions will deal with heavy morning mist and light rains, while others stay completely dry.

Cold weather and rainfall

Nairobi and its neighbouring counties will experience typical July weather. The met department stated that “intermittent cool and cloudy conditions accompanied by light rains are expected to prevail in counties in the Central highlands and Nairobi area” throughout the month.

This pattern will also cover sections of the southeastern lowlands, western Kenya, and the central Rift Valley.

Residents in Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi should expect overcast skies, morning drizzles, and occasional afternoon showers.

Similar cold conditions will affect Machakos and Makueni counties, particularly areas bordering Nairobi, alongside the high-altitude zones of Marsabit.

Meanwhile, the coastal strip will receive the highest amount of rainfall. Counties such as Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are highly likely to get near-average to above-average rainfall during the month.

Sunny and dry conditions

A large part of the country will remain dry with rainfall amounts falling below the historical averages. The Lake Victoria Basin and regions west of the Rift Valley will see minimal rainfall.

This dry spell affects Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia. Similar dry conditions will extend to Baringo, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, and Bomet.

In the north, Turkana and Samburu counties will remain mainly sunny and dry. However, areas along the borders of Uganda and South Sudan might experience occasional showers, though the total rainfall will still be below average.

The northeastern region, including Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will also stay mostly sunny. The same sunny conditions apply to Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado.

Despite the cold patches in the highlands, the weather authority confirmed that the whole country will generally be warmer than what is usually recorded in July.
