DPP granted order to verify Kisumu city manager’s hospitalisation documents

Milimani Anti-Corruption Senior Principal Magistrate Celesa Asis Okore has allowed the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) to verify hospital documents for Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga.

Appearing before Magistrate Okore on Friday, February 6, 2026, the prosecution asked the court to grant them two weeks for their investigators to verify the hospital documents produced in court by Abala’s legal team.

The State told the court that they had just been given the medical documents in the morning and that they were not able to verify them immediately, adding that the verification is important to ascertain if indeed he is sick and admitted.

“Your honour, I would like to make an application that our investigators will verify these documents; two weeks is enough for them to verify, your honour,” the prosecution told the court.

Further, the State wished the Kisumu City Manager well in his recovery.

However, the prosecution urged the court to ensure that when the matter comes up for mention, a plea-taking date is set, arguing that it has been deferred several times.

“Your honour, we have mentioned this matter many times; we want the plea-taking date to be set because it has taken too long,” the State told the court.

Request for bond extension

Notably, the legal team also asked the court to extend bond terms granted to Abala until the next mention date.

The lawyers also informed the court that they have written to DPP seeking a review of the charges against their client.

“Your Honour, we have written to the DPP requesting a review of the charges. The last time we appeared before your brother, Honourable Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa, he took up the matter; it was on the application of the DPP, who sought more time to finalise the review.

The DPP confirmed to the court that the defence indeed wrote to them asking for a review of the charges, and the DPP has been briefed on the same.

The prosecutor told the court that the review is still pending for direction from the DPP, adding that they have also received the last two weeks asking for a review again on one of the files on one of the matters.

“Your honour, two weeks ago we received a letter, but it is also seeking a review, and the same is also pending before the DPP for direction. So, Your Honour, once the direction is given from the DPP, I will come and address the court on the same,” the prosecution told the court.
