52 Stolen livestock recovered in Isiolo after fierce gunfight

In a dramatic security operation, 52 stolen livestock have been successfully recovered in Isiolo following a coordinated response by the National Police Service (NPS) and National Police Reservists (NPR).
According to a X post by NPS on Sunday, January 18, 2026, the operation targeted a group of persons of interest involved in the theft of cattle reported earlier at Mutuati Police Station in Meru County.
Officers intercepted the individuals in the Kampi Samaki area of Garbatula Sub-County, where a fierce exchange of fire ensued. Faced with the rapid and coordinated police response, the persons of interest abandoned the stolen livestock and fled the scene.

The police highlighted that in the latest operation alone, 22 head of cattle were recovered alive and safely escorted back to the rightful owner.
When combined with prior recoveries in the case, this brings the total number of livestock returned to 52, effectively restoring the entire herd.

The National Police Service reassured the public that security operations in the region remain robust and sustained and urged communities to continue sharing timely information to aid law enforcement efforts.
“Communities are encouraged to continue co-operating with security agencies by sharing timely information, as the Service remains steadfast in its commitment to protect life and property,” the Service said in a statement.
