e-Citizen to go offline on Saturday: All you need to know

Kenyans planning to make government payments this coming weekend will have to adjust their schedules. The Directorate of e-Citizen Services has announced that the digital portal will go offline temporarily on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
This scheduled maintenance is expected to impact thousands of users who rely on the platform for daily transactions, from business registrations to driving licence applications.
The temporary shutdown is meant to allow for system upgrades that will ensure a smoother experience in the future.
Reason for temporary shutdown
According to a public notice issued by Huduma Kenya, the portal will be offline for five hours, from 7:00 PM to 12:00 midnight.
The government has explained that the brief pause is aimed at improving the portal’s transaction processing efficiency. Specifically, “the maintenance is necessary to facilitate an upgrade of the eCitizen payment gateway as part of ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery on the platform.”

This upgrade comes at a time when the state is actively digitising public services to streamline revenue collection. Over the last few years, the platform has seen a huge increase in traffic as more departments migrate their systems to the single paybill registry.
Services affected by the downtime
During the five-hour maintenance window, users will not be able to complete any transactions that require payment. The Directorate has made it clear that “during this period, all payment services on eCitizen will be temporarily unavailable.”
This means popular services like National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) bookings, passport applications, business name searches, and land rate payments will be out of reach. Additionally, those seeking to pay for police clearance certificates or make payments at Huduma Centres across the country during those late hours will have to wait.
Kenyans are advised to make all their urgent payments before 7:00 PM on Saturday to avoid last-minute disruptions. The Directorate has apologised to the public for the hitch, stating, “We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank users for their patience and understanding as we work to enhance our services.”
Normal operations are expected to resume after midnight once the upgrade is complete.
