Samidoh says those who deny others freedom deserve none amid tense Ol Kalou by-election

Mugithi singer Samidoh has shared a fresh message about freedom as vote counting gets underway in the hotly contested Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, hours after appearing alongside Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leaders during a tense Facebook livestream that highlighted security concerns at several polling stations.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Samidoh questioned the true meaning of freedom, arguing that everyone has the right to live the way they choose.
He added that people who deny others the right to live freely should not expect to enjoy that freedom themselves.
“Is Freedom anything other than the right to live the way we wish? You deny us; you don’t deserve it either! #OlKalou,” he wrote.

Facebook live
Although the singer did not directly explain what prompted the message, it comes just hours after he went live on Facebook from Ol Kalou alongside DCP parliamentary candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Ngotho and DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala as tensions escalated during the by-election.
The DCP candidate revealed that masked armed men travelling in Subaru vehicles had raided St Joseph’s Primary School before moving to other polling centres, including Simba, Mumbi and AC Primary School.
Addressing supporters during the broadcast, the candidate displayed spent bullet cartridges, saying one was from an AK-47 rifle while another was from a G3 rifle, as he urged armed groups to stay away from Ol Kalou.
He further appealed to residents to remain vigilant while insisting that locals had managed to chase away the armed men from several polling stations.
“This is Ol Kalou, and we are in a place called Kwa Mukurinu. We have gathered here because a few minutes ago, some masked armed goons raided St Joseph’s Primary School. They came in Subarus, and when our team noticed them, they charged at them and cornered them. They begged to be allowed to leave,” he claimed.

Malala, who also addressed viewers during the livestream, called on residents to remain calm as the vote-counting exercise commenced.
He urged supporters to remain at polling centres to monitor the tallying process, expressing confidence that the DCP candidate had secured victory in the closely watched contest.
“We want to ask the people of Ol Kalou to remain calm as we work towards counting the votes. We are confident that we have won, and there is no cause for alarm,” Malala said.
Although Samidoh did not address viewers during the live broadcast, he remained beside the DCP leaders throughout the session before waving at the camera as the livestream came to an end.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election was held to elect a successor to the late MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, with the race largely dominated by DCP’s Sammy Douglas Kamau Ngotho and UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah.
