3 killed in Machakos road crash involving motorcycle and matatu

Three people were killed and two others seriously injured following a road crash involving a motorcycle and a Maruti matatu at the Mutituni area along the Machakos–Kangundo road in Machakos County on Monday, August 3, 2026.

The accident occurred when the motorcycle, which was heading towards Machakos town, collided with the oncoming Maruti matatu travelling towards Kangundo. All three fatalities were passengers on the motorcycle.

Assistant Chief Francis Kitonga said residents had appealed to the relevant authorities to install speed bumps along the accident-prone stretch, but their pleas had gone unanswered.

“Tulikuwa tumeomba kuwekwa bumps, lakini mpaka wa leo hazijawekwa. Watu wengi wamepoteza maisha yao mahali hapa. Ni makosa kuendelea kushuhudia watu wakipoteza maisha katika eneo moja. Kwetu leo ni asubuhi mbaya, tumepokea habari za kusikitisha kuhusu ajali hii katika barabara zetu,” Kitonga said.

An eyewitness, Francis Musyoki, said he found the wreckage while on his way to work and noted that the motorcycle had been carrying five people, contrary to traffic regulations.

“Nilikuwa naenda kazini nikakuta ajali hapa karibu na bridge ya EKT kati ya Maruti na pikipiki. Pikipiki ilikuwa imebeba watu watano, jambo ambalo si zuri. Tunaomba askari wa trafiki wawe waangalifu sana kuhusu pikipiki, maana kubeba watu watano ni hatari sana. Waliopoteza maisha ni watatu,” Musyoki said.

Good samaritans rescue survivors

Another eyewitness, Joseph Musyoki, said members of the public quickly responded to rescue the survivors before an ambulance arrived.

“Tuliita ambulansi ikaja ikawachukua majeruhi na kuwapeleka hospitalini. Walikuwa katika hali mbaya sana, hawakuweza hata kuzungumza. Kwenye Maruti tulimtoa mwanaume mmoja ambaye hakuwa ameumia sana. Alikuwa na majeraha madogo na akapelekwa hospitalini,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary, while the two injured victims were rushed to the same facility for treatment. The occupant of the Maruti sustained minor injuries.

The accident comes just a day after eight people were killed and one seriously injured in a grisly road accident involving a tuk-tuk and a lorry at Murubara along the Mwea–Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.
