Cold nights can make it harder to settle into bed, especially when the temperature drops and your bedroom feels chilly. For many people, getting comfortable is not just about adding another blanket but also making a few simple changes to the sleeping environment.

You do not necessarily need expensive equipment to make your bedroom warmer and more comfortable. A few practical adjustments can make a noticeable difference.

Use warm bedding

The right bedding can make cold nights much more comfortable. Use blankets, duvets or comforters that provide enough warmth without making you feel trapped under heavy layers.

Flannel or fleece bedding can also feel warmer against the skin than some lighter fabrics.

It is also important to keep bedding dry. Damp blankets can make you feel colder and may contribute to an uncomfortable sleeping environment.

Block unnecessary drafts

Cold air can enter through gaps around windows, doors and other openings.

Check whether your bedroom has noticeable drafts and, where possible, close gaps around doors or windows. Curtains can also help reduce the amount of cold air entering through windows.

However, avoid completely sealing a room with poor ventilation. Fresh air remains important, particularly when using any heating appliance.

Wear comfortable sleepwear

Your choice of night clothes can make a difference when temperatures fall.

Instead of sleeping in very light clothing, consider comfortable layers made from warm, breathable fabrics. Socks can also help keep your feet warm if they tend to get cold at night.

Avoid clothes that are too tight, as they may make it uncomfortable to sleep.

Keep your bedroom dry and well ventilated

Cold weather can sometimes lead people to keep windows closed for long periods. However, proper ventilation is still important.

Allowing some fresh air into the room can help prevent excessive moisture and stuffiness. If your bedroom becomes damp, look for the source and address it rather than simply adding more heating.

A dry, comfortable room can make cold nights easier to manage.

Prepare your bed before sleeping

Small preparations before bedtime can help you settle down more comfortably.

Make your bed early enough for the bedding to reach a comfortable temperature, organise your blankets and keep your warm sleepwear nearby.

You can also have a warm, non-caffeinated drink as part of your bedtime routine if it suits you.

A comfortable bedroom does not have to be expensive to create. Warm bedding, fewer drafts, suitable sleepwear and good ventilation can help make cold nights more comfortable while keeping your sleeping space pleasant.
