How to safely remove a broken lightbulb from a socket

A shattered lightbulb is a common household nuisance, but handling sharp glass near electrical contacts can quickly turn a simple repair into a serious safety hazard.
The exposed filament wires and jagged glass remaining inside the fitting carry live current whenever the circuit stays active.

Use household tools to extract the broken base safely

Select a firm, fresh potato and slice it cleanly in half. Press the cut end firmly onto the exposed glass stems inside the socket.

The firm potato flesh grips the sharp glass edges, allowing you to turn the potato counterclockwise until the threaded metal base backs out smoothly from the fitting.
If a potato is unavailable, insulated needle-nose pliers provide a reliable mechanical solution. Confirm that the tool handles feature thick rubber coating designed for electrical tasks.
Insert the tips of the closed pliers into the hollow metal collar, open the jaws outward to grip the inner metal rim firmly, and turn counterclockwise. Once the base comes free, wipe out any remaining glass dust with a clean dry cloth.
