Willis Raburu explains why he left media industry

Former journalist Willis Raburu has explained why he left the media industry, saying it was time to move on and create space for a new generation.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, he said the decision came after reflection on his journey and what he had achieved over the years.

“Because it is the same thing, that is why I feel like this is such a right time. I felt like at that point, it was time to start ushering in the next generation of people,” Willis Raburu said.

He explained that his time in media had reached a point where he felt fulfilled with his progress. He said he started thinking about his early dreams and how far he had come. Raburu added that his decision was guided by personal growth and timing.

“In my mind, I was like it was to….” Willis Raburu said.

He went on to reflect on his campus days and how he used to plan his future. He explained that he had a habit of writing down his goals and dreams. According to him, this helped him stay focused on what he wanted to achieve.

“I think about myself when I was in campus, and I had this book, and I think one day I will post that picture,” Willis Raburu said.

Time to create space for new voices

He explained that in that book, he clearly wrote down his ambitions, including working at local TV station and his expected earnings. He said he followed the idea of writing down a vision and making it clear. Raburu added that this process shaped his journey into media.

“I have this book that I used to write down all my dreams. I literally wrote there, ‘Citizen TV, I wrote down how much money I wanna get paid, how the Bible says write the vision and make it plain,” he said.

Raburu also spoke about the media environment during his time on campus. He explained that there were limited opportunities and fewer courses focused on television. He said the industry looked very different compared to now.

He added that television was not as widespread then, and only a few names stood out in the industry. He said this made his dream feel distant at the time and noted that the space has since grown, making it easier for new talent to rise.
