Comedy content creator Mokaya has opened up about his decision to stop regularly imitating Goliath wa Bungoma, the character that catapulted him to viral fame.

In an interview on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Mokaya reflected on the massive success of his early skits while explaining the personal and professional reasons behind stepping away from the role that defined his breakout period.

The viral phenomenon

Mokaya’s impressions of Goliath wa Bungoma, complete with exaggerated mannerisms, lines like “Pois Kayen”, and energetic delivery, became an internet sensation in Kenya, with the clips racking up millions of views.

The skits not only boosted Mokaya’s profile but also amplified the real Goliath’s visibility, turning him into a household name.

Many viewers still consider those videos some of Mokaya’s best work, with compilations continuing to circulate widely.

Why mokaya chose to move on

In the interview, Mokaya made it clear that while he enjoyed riding the wave, he refused to let one character define him:

“I was able to do it. It was a character I rode on. But at the same time, I am a person who doesn’t like a character to shine on me.”

He expressed discomfort with fans constantly greeting him as “Goliath wa Bungoma” feeling it limited his identity as a creator. Mokaya emphasised that he wants to evolve and explore new characters and content rather than being boxed in.

Mokaya clarified that he did not stop because he was tired or losing momentum. Instead, he chose to step back at a point when he felt the timing was right.

He revealed that he often listens to feedback from people around him and focuses on staying creative rather than forcing content.

“When you look at it, even when I stopped doing them, i didn’t stop doing them because I was starting to feel weak.  I stopped whenever someone would say, like, this one is out. Let’s give it a go, you see?  The first thing I do is give you content,” Mokaya said.

Despite moving away from the Goliath wa Bungoma skits, Mokaya insisted he can still revisit the character occasionally if inspiration strikes.
