Gachagua names his top 3 most adored Mugithi artistes
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed his deep appreciation for Mugithi music and proceeded to name his top three favourite artistes.
Speaking during a quick-fire interview with BBC Swahili on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Gachagua said he primarily listens to local music and has little interest in international artistes, noting that Mugithi remains his preferred genre.
He went on to name one-man guitarist Samidoh Muchoki, Tonny Young, and Waithaka Wa Jane as his favourite performers, describing himself as a full-time Mugithi fan.
“For music, I don’t really listen to international artistes. I prefer local songs like Mugithi, and some of my favourite artistes are Samidoh, Tony Young and Waithaka wa Jane. I am a Mugithi guy full-time,” he said.
Beyond music, Gachagua also opened up about his personal tastes and background, offering insights into his upbringing and lifestyle preferences.
On food, he said he prefers chips over ugali, adding that he particularly enjoys potatoes due to the memories they bring from his childhood. He recalled growing up in a modest environment where boiled potatoes were a common meal, often eaten without accompaniments.
“Between ugali and chips, I would choose chips, especially potatoes, the sweet boiled ones we used to eat when we were young. Life was not easy back then, so we would just eat plain boiled potatoes and go to bed. Now eating them feels like going down memory lane,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President also expressed a preference for red meat over chicken, attributing this to his cultural background, noting that he has both Maasai and Meru roots.
“Between meat and chicken, I would go for meat because I have Maasai roots, and also some Meru roots,” he added.
On football, Gachagua declared his long-standing support for AFC Leopards, saying he has supported the club for many years and used to attend matches at City Stadium.
He reminisced about sitting in the popularly known “Russian seats” rather than VIP sections during his younger days.
“Between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, I am an AFC Leopards fan from way back. I used to watch their matches at City Stadium and sit in the ‘Russian seats,’ not VIP. I have never changed because when I decide on something, that’s final,” he shared.
He emphasised his loyalty to the club, stating that he does not change his decisions once made. However, he dismissed interest in international football, saying he does not follow foreign leagues or teams.
“But between Manchester United and Arsenal, I don’t follow those. I don’t focus on foreign things or those related to our colonisers,” Gachagua added.
