PCEA announces major milestone after receiving five-year tax exemption from KRA

The Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) has announced a major milestone after receiving a five-year Income Tax Exemption Certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

The certificate was officially presented to the Church by KRA officials during the second day of the PCEA Finance Committee Retreat, which was held from Wednesday, July 22, to Friday, July 24, 2026.

The development marks the first time PCEA has received an income tax exemption certificate since 2010, bringing an end to years of waiting and marking a significant development for the Church’s operations and ministry programmes.

In a statement shared by the head office on Facebook on Friday, July 24, 2026, the church said it will be able to direct more resources towards its core mission and programmes aimed at serving communities across the country.

“The Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) has received a 5-year Income Tax Exemption Certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), marking a significant milestone for the Church’s ministry and operations,” the statement read.

The Church said the tax exemption will support its work in areas including evangelism, education, healthcare, community development and humanitarian initiatives, among other ministry programmes.

The development is expected to provide the Church with greater room to channel its resources towards activities that form part of its wider mission and service to society.

“The certificate was officially presented by KRA officials during the second day of the PCEA Finance Committee Retreat, held from 22nd to 24th July 2026. This is the first time the Church has received the exemption since 2010, a major achievement after many years. Receiving the exemption means that the Church is able to direct more resources towards its core mission, including evangelism, education, healthcare, community development, humanitarian work, and other ministry programmes that positively impact society,” the statement added.

PCEA Secretary General Rev. Dr Robert Waihenya expressed appreciation to KRA for granting the exemption and acknowledged the support and cooperation extended by the authority throughout the application process.

Rev. Dr Waihenya also recognised the leadership of KRA Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi and KRA Commissioner Ezekiel Obura, thanking them for their role in fostering positive engagement between the tax authority and the Church.

The Secretary General said the milestone reflected the importance of collaboration between the Church and relevant institutions as PCEA continues to pursue its mandate.

“The Secretary General Rev. Dr. Robert Waihenya expressed his sincere appreciation to the Kenya Revenue Authority for granting the exemption. He thanked the KRA team for their support and collaboration throughout the application process. He also acknowledged the efforts of KRA Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi and KRA Commissioner Ezekiel Obura, appreciating their leadership and the positive engagement between KRA and the Church,” the statement read in part.

While celebrating the development, PCEA also urged members of its Finance Committee to ensure that all Church institutions remain fully compliant with applicable laws and regulations.

Rev. Dr Waihenya further called for responsible use of the exemption certificate, emphasising the importance of ensuring that the tax relief is managed appropriately and contributes to the Church’s broader mission.

The Church said the exemption does not remove the need for accountability and compliance, but instead comes with a responsibility to maintain proper financial management and stewardship.

“He further urged members of the Finance Committee to ensure that all PCEA institutions remain fully compliant and encouraged responsible use of the exemption certificate. As PCEA embarks on this new five-year exemption period, the Church reaffirms its commitment to good stewardship, accountability, transparency, and compliance, ensuring that the tax relief translates into greater impact in ministry and service to communities across the country,” it added.
