I lost a lot of money: Obinna opens up on the downside of Vurugu 2 boxing match

Media personality Steve Thompson Maghana, widely known as Oga Obinna, has opened up about the financial strain behind the success of the Vurugu 2 boxing match, saying that despite pulling massive online numbers, the event ended up costing him heavily.

Speaking after the boxing entertainment show on Monday, June 22, 2026, Obinna said the livestream was affected after some viewers interfered with the official streaming site, forcing the team to quickly switch and stitch the event for YouTube streaming.

“Vurugu 2 was massive, but the downside is some people hacked our site, alafu the site ikahang, and a lot of things were not happening. We decided to stitch and let people watch on YouTube,” Obinna said.

According to him, if half of that audience, about 35,000 people, had paid Ksh 200 each for the stream, the event could have generated around Ksh 7 million in revenue, money he says would have gone a long way in funding Vurugu 3.

“I lost a lot of money on that. If we had 70 thousand people watching on YouTube, let’s say half of the number decided to pay for the stream at Ksh 200, how much money is that? I could have gotten the capital to do Vurugu 3 but all is not lost.”

Despite the challenges, Obinna noted that the online turnout was impressive, with the livestream attracting over 70,000 viewers at its peak.

“We had the highest streaming ever; there was some point we had over 70 thousand people watching the live on YouTube,” he said.

Still, he remained optimistic, saying the attention the event received, both positive and negative, played a role in its visibility.

Obinna also took time to appreciate both supporters and critics, saying public conversations around the event contributed to its reach.

“I want to also thank everybody who made this happen, from the supporters to the haters; it is a collective effort. When you talk negatively about something, you are putting attention on it, and when you are talking something positively, you are putting attention on it,” he stated.

He added that even negative publicity can sometimes help marketing because it keeps people talking.

“The bad news is negative news spreads faster than the positive news, which is also good for marketing. So I really appreciate all the people who were speaking negatively about it. Thank you so much. I am preparing to do Vurugu 3. I do hope and pray you do the same,” Obinna added.

The media personality further said that preparations for Vurugu 3 are already underway, expressing hope that the next edition will be even bigger and better.
