American singer Doechii has explained her decision to appear barefoot at the Met Gala 2026, saying the choice was intentional and part of her overall artistic expression.

The musician arrived at the event in New York City without shoes, drawing attention to her detailed look and personal style.

She explained that every part of her appearance was carefully planned. She said her decision to skip footwear was not random but tied to how she wanted to present herself on the red carpet.

“This is art to me, this is human to me. It’s vulnerable, it’s feminine,” Doechii said, as quoted by Teen Vogue.

She wore a custom outfit by Marc Jacobs, featuring a deep purple design with draped fabric across her body. The outfit was styled with a matching head wrap in purple and maroon tones, creating a consistent look from head to toe.

Doechii explained that she chose to decorate her feet with henna instead of wearing heels. She said the design was part of her plan to remain barefoot while still completing her look with detail and meaning.

“It’s very comfortable, but also very vulnerable,” she said.

She added that the barefoot choice reflected a deeper idea of being connected and present. She explained that standing on the red carpet without shoes carried a message about how she views herself and her art.

“I feel like bare feet, it signifies a groundedness. I’m not scared of the floor!” Doechii said.

She also wore anklets that highlighted the henna on her feet and hands. The designs were inspired by West African art and added another layer to her appearance. She explained that the details were meant to work together as one complete look.

“This is art to me, this is human to me,” Doechii said.

This was not the first time she chose to go without shoes at a major event. In 2025, she also appeared barefoot while attending a Chloé fashion show, showing a consistent approach to her style choices.

Her makeup followed a similar direction, with dramatic lashes, soft blush, light green eye shadow, and glitter across her face. The look was created to match the tone of her outfit and overall presentation.

“The face tapes are there on purpose because… it’s c*nt,” Doechii said.
