Pastor Ruth Matete says she was bullied in primary school over her naturally big lips
Pastor and gospel singer Ruth Matete has revealed that she was frequently bullied by classmates because of her naturally big lips.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, July 2, 2026, Matete reflected on her days at Uhuru Primary School, where she said fellow pupils, especially boys, often mocked her appearance and even fought her over what they saw as an unusual physical feature.
According to the pastor, she was popularly nicknamed “Lipsy” or “Malipsy”, names that followed her throughout her time in primary school.
“Back in Primary school, nilikua naitwa ‘Lipsy ama Malipsy’. If you were in Uhuru Primary during my years, you would remember,” she wrote.
Matete recalled that the teasing often escalated into physical confrontations, admitting that although she could be mischievous, she frequently found herself on the receiving end of beatings.
“Kwanza boys. Aki, they used to fight me a lot. But na mimi nilikua mchokozi. But nilikua napigwa,” she added.
Beyond the bullying, the gospel singer revealed that she also struggled to properly care for her lips as a child, making the experience even more painful.
She explained that because she did not know how to maintain them, her lips would regularly become dry, crack and even bleed.
“I didn’t know how to take care of my big lips. So most times they would just crack and be bleeding all over the place,” she shared.

However, Matete said things eventually changed as she grew older and learned how to care for herself.
She noted that what was once her greatest insecurity has now become one of the physical features she appreciates the most.
“But with time, I learned how to take care of them. What was once my insecurity is now one of the things I really appreciate about my body,” she said.
Matete further explained that maintaining naturally big lips can sometimes be challenging, especially when it comes to finding the right beauty products.
She disclosed that lip gloss has become her preferred choice for keeping her lips moisturised and healthy.
“Big lips can be tricky to maintain and even trickier to know what lippie works, and which one doesn’t. Mine is lip gloss most times,” she wrote.
