Gospel singer Liz Wangui Muchiri has opened up about the painful reality of grief following the death of her mother, admitting that she never understood why some people recorded themselves crying and shared the videos online until she experienced such a devastating loss herself.

In an emotional Facebook message on Saturday, July 11, 2026, the singer reflected on how her perspective on mourning has completely changed since losing her mother.

Liz confessed that before the tragedy struck her own family, she often wondered why grieving people openly documented their emotional breakdowns on social media.

“I used to wonder why people can’t just move on after losing a loved one. Like, why even record yourself crying and then post it… until the same loss hit me,” she wrote.

According to the gospel singer, she now understands that grief comes in unexpected waves, often catching a person off guard even during ordinary moments.

She described how emotions can suddenly overwhelm someone who appeared perfectly fine just moments earlier.

“Am now in those shoes and ready to walk that journey; one minute you are cruising, the next minute the window opens and blows wind into your eyes and tears can’t stop flowing,” she said.

Liz also explained that simple things such as listening to music have become emotional triggers because they instantly remind her of the moments she shared with her late mother.

“One minute you are listening to music, the next minute the same music brings back memories like floods… everywhere I look, something reminds me of you,” she wrote.

The singer further revealed that one of the hardest parts of grieving is coming to terms with the painful reality that a loved one will never return.

She described the overwhelming feelings of emptiness, helplessness and hopelessness that accompany such moments.

“Then comes the hopelessness of knowing they’re never coming back, the emptiness, the helplessness, and that is when the pain hits like a train,” she expressed.

Despite the heartbreak, Liz said she continues to find comfort in believing that her mother is no longer in pain and expressed hope that they will meet again someday.

“But I find solace in knowing that you’re not in pain anymore and that maybe in the next life I’ll see you again mamaa,” she added.

She concluded by saying she is slowly learning to live with the pain while holding on to the love and memories they shared, promising to honour her mother’s legacy through the life she lives.

“I’ll learn to live with the pain and the love we shared with you mom, and hold on to the good memories while living a life that honours your memories. Continue resting in peace, my love,” she wrote.

Liz’s latest reflection comes just days after she publicly defended fellow gospel singer Naomi Gathoni following criticism surrounding her appearance during her late mother’s memorial service.

At the time, Liz dismissed claims that Naomi had been laughed at during the memorial, explaining that she had personally invited the gospel singer after learning about the challenges she had been facing.

She also clarified that a viral video showing people laughing during the memorial had been taken out of context, saying the light-hearted moment occurred during a different segment of the programme and did not amount to mocking Naomi.

Liz’s mother passed away in late June 2026, with the family holding a memorial service at Blue Springs Hotel before giving her a final send-off.
