Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has denied any involvement in the ongoing probe into the circumstances surrounding the gruesome killing of the late Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were on April 30, 2025.

Speaking after landing at the Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay on Thursday, May 8, 2025, ahead of the funeral procession of Were, the governor distanced herself from the probe, indicating that she is only keen on giving the fallen MP a decent sendoff.

“We have seen the investigations going on, and we want to just say that we allow the investigative agencies to conclude their investigations, and I have seen some people dragging others into it,” Wanga said.

No role in investigations

“As the governor of Homa Bay County, I have no role in the investigations. Let us leave investigations to investigating agencies, and they have made progress, which we appreciate.”

She urged the residents of the county to exercise restraint and observe peace during the funeral ceremony of the late MP at the Agoro Sare Primary School before he is buried in his homestead in Kachien.

“I want to thank the people of Homa Bay for remaining peaceful, calm and being very patient. I want to request that tomorrow, we have a duty to give the late honourable Were a good sendoff,” Wanga urged.

Aroko blames politics

The remarks came after Philip Nahashon Aroko was summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to surrender himself to the nearest police station on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

In a statement, Aroko, who challenged Were in the 2022 Kasipul Constituency elections, indicated that he smelled interference in the investigations from Governor Wanga.

“I want to tell the people of Homa Bay County that the politics in that county has been turned to madness; it is not politics; it is thuggery. I saw the Governor Wanga pushing so much for me to be called here; she has been making calls to the police for me to be summoned,” Aroko said.

His lawyers are now demanding that he be produced before a court of law, after police officers failed to produce him at the JKIA Court in connection with the matter.

Aroko is among the 10 persons of interest that the authorities have arrested and detained in connection with the macabre assassination of the Kasipul MP along Ngong Road, while stuck in traffic.

The other persons taken in for questioning on the matter are the late MP’s driver and bodyguard, who were with him in the vehicle on the fateful night.
