Police have arrested a Ugandan national implicated in a robbery with violence incident on November 1, 2024, in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
The lady who had been working alongside another nanny at an apartment in Eastleigh is reported to have opened the door to an assailant who went ahead to injure the other nanny and make away with valuables from the house.
However, after weeks of search, police managed to nab the suspect who had been in the country as she attempted to board a Uganda-bound bus.
“A Ugandan nanny who has been on the run following her involvement in a daring robbery plot targeting her employer in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area has been arrested. Nabalayo Everline Loice, 23 years old, has been taken into custody by detectives from DCI Starehe after a robbery incident that unfolded on November 1, 2024,” DCI said in a statement on January 7, 2025.
Armed robbery
“According to reports filed at Pangani Police Station, Nabalayo was in the house with a colleague housemaid when she intentionally opened the door, admitting an unknown assailant armed with a hammer. In a shocking turn of events, the duo reportedly assaulted the other maid, leaving her for dead in the bathroom. They then made off with a haul that included a gold set valued at Sh210,000, a Lenovo XY laptop worth Sh110,000, and an Infinix phone priced at Sh15,000.”
During the initial report of the robbery incident, police indicated that the nabbed nanny fled in the company of the assailant with valuables including laptops, gold jewellery, a phone and money in different currencies.
“During the incident, various valuable items were pilfered, including pieces of gold jewellery, an unspecified amount of cash in both KES and U.S. dollars, as well as four laptops belonging to the family, which were reported stolen during the incident,” DCI observed in the initial report.
Sustained injuries
Adding: “Upon entering, the assailant, reportedly a Ugandan national, grievously assaulted a 20-year-old Somali house-help named Hakimo Muhidin with assistance from Evelyne.”
Muhidin was reported to have sustained a broken tooth, and injuries to the head and legs and was suspected to have been whipped following the discovery of injuries consistent with whipping on her back.
The owners of the house were absent during the daytime robbery, with police reports indicating that the husband had been out with the kids while the wife had travelled to seek treatment in India.
The arrested nanny was only three weeks in the household at the time of the incident.
