14 arrested as police in Mombasa intensify crackdown on Panga Boys gang

Police in Mombasa have arrested 14 more persons of interest even as the crackdown on the dreaded Panga Boys gang intensifies.

In a statement on Sunday, January 19, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that the 14 were smoked out of their hideout in Junda Kasarani Ndogo area.

“As part of the ongoing efforts to dismantle the infamous Panga boys gang that has been terrorizing and instilling fear among innocent residents in Mombasa and surrounding areas, Police Officers from Mjambere police station in Kisauni Sub-County have apprehended 14 additional suspects affiliated with the machete-wielding gang,” DCI stated.

The persons of interest include Clinton Nyaga (25) David Nyaga (25), Rashid Lugwe (25) Juma Safari (20), Benjamin Dickson (24), Ayub Koech (18), Hamisi Dzombo (25), Brian Dickson (18), Fadhili Hamisi (18), Juma Nyale (25), Saidi Hamisi (23), Ali Swale (19), Ali Yusuf (19) and Rajab Bakari (18).

The 14 have been escorted to Mjambere Police Station for processing pending arraignment.

Panga Boys gang

This comes days after Police in Mombasa arrested four persons of interest following a crackdown against the infamous Panga Boys gang in the coastal county.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, DCI announced that the arrests followed reports of an attack of two members of the public who were heading to the Kongowea market.

“In a move to curb the menace of the notorious machete-wielding gang terrorising members of the public in Mombasa and its surrounding areas, officers from Mjambere Police Station in Kisauni Sub-County have apprehended four gang members and seized their weapons,” DCI stated.

The persons, whom the police say defied surrender orders, include Ali Yusuf (24), Said Hamisi (23), Ali Swalleh (19) and Siajabu Bakari (19).

“The crackdown followed reports of an attack on two individuals heading to the Kongowea market. Acting swiftly, police officers on foot patrol traced the suspects Ali Yusuf, 24, Said Hamisi, 23, and two 19-year-olds, Ali Swalleh and Siajabu Bakari to Kadongo area,” DCI added.

The arrest of the 14 brings to 23 persons of interest arrested in connection with the infamous Panga Boys gang.

Others arrested in connection with the gang include 24-year-old Abbas Abdallah Abbas aka ‘Tajiri’, Brian Omondi Odida, Shaban Munga (26), Sande Kalama Kitsao (24) and Shebani Charo Kalume (34).
