ODPP approves manslaughter charges against Body by Design clinic proprietors

The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has approved manslaughter charges against Body by Design clinic proprietors following the death of Lucy Wambui Kananu.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, ODPP stated that Robert Maweu Mutula, a surgeon; George Wakaria Njoroge and Lilian Edna Wanjiru, the proprietor of Body by Design, will take pleas on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

ODPP says that the three persons of interest failed to appear at the Kibera Law Courts on Tuesday, prompting the plea taking to be pushed to Wednesday.

“Four suspects are set to take plea tomorrow, Wednesday, 2nd April 2024, at the Kibera Law Courts in Nairobi, in connection with the death of Lucy Wambui Kananu The suspects—Robert Maweu Mutula, a surgeon; George Wakaria Njoroge; Lilian Edna Wanjiru, the proprietor of Body by Design; and the Body by Design hospital—failed to appear in court today. They are expected to face manslaughter charges,” ODPP stated.

“The suspects were initially scheduled to take their plea today but missed the court appearance, prompting the court to reschedule the hearing for tomorrow.”

The charges relate to the death of Lucy Wambui Kamau on October 6, 2024, at Omnicare Medical Limited, also known as Body by Design, located on Kabarsiran Avenue in Nairobi County.

Senior Principal Magistrate Temu directed the suspects to be in court by 9:00 am.
