The law enforcement officers have launched an investigation following a chaotic incident that disrupted a Sunday church service at PCEA Mwiki, Kasarani East Parish on Sunday, April 7, 2025.

The service, which was attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other politicians, turned into a scene of violence and panic as a group of rowdy individuals stormed the church.

According to a statement released by the DCI on April 7, 2025, over a hundred motorcycles, each carrying two to three people, arrived at the church venue from Kangundo Road, trailing behind Gachagua’s entourage. The group began causing a disturbance inside the church, demanding money from the politicians present.

The DCI clarified that the gunshots were fired by Gachagua’s VIP security team and licensed civilian firearm holders, who acted in self-defence to protect the political leaders. The rowdy group had already caused damage to parked vehicles and church property.

Tensions escalated when gunshots rang out on the church grounds. DCI said local police at Mwiki Police Station responded and mobilized to subdue the unruly group, who retreated as security forces took control of the situation. Several individuals, along with 10 abandoned motorcycles, were detained at the station.

“The ongoing investigations aim to bring to book those responsible for the regrettable incident, which is one among several that have been witnessed recently in various parts of the country,” the DCI statement read.

The Mwiki Police Command also revealed that the church had failed to notify the police about the planned event, which included political figures. This failure meant that no security measures had been arranged in advance to manage the situation and prevent such an outbreak of violence.

“Incidents involving violence and intimidation not only tarnish the sanctity of community events but also pose a significant threat to the well-being of all attendees. Individuals must express their concerns through proper channels rather than resorting to disorderly behaviour that could lead to grave consequences. Let us work together to foster an environment of safety and security during public gatherings,” the DCI added.

Chaos

In the wake of the chaos, videos shared by the media captured the tense moments as Gachagua’s security team worked to neutralize the threat. Gunshots were heard as security officers attempted to restore order, with worshippers screaming and fleeing in panic. Several plastic chairs were broken, and some of Gachagua’s vehicles were vandalized with rocks.

Despite the terrifying interruption, the service resumed after the situation was brought under control. A local reverend continued with the sermon, and calm was eventually restored. The investigation is ongoing, as authorities work to identify those responsible for the disruption.
