A section of Kenyans online took umbrage with a post a popular stand-up comedian shared online.
Obinna Ike Igwee, who is popularly known as Obinna, posted a picture of the short-statured Tanzanian Bongo movie actress Tausi Mdegela.
The comedian shared a photo of the actress, who had been pictured heavily pregnant, with the offensive and inappropriate caption: “Boychild has no limits chissos!!
The post did not go well with many netizens who did not find it remotely funny. In fact, many were offended since the post implied people with disability do not deserve to have normal lives. Many of those who responded to the post asked him to pull it down and apologise.
The actress delivered in early January. News about the delivery was first shared online by the actress through her Instagram.
To many this would pass as cyber bullying, whose many effects have been documented and include the following:
- A drop in self-esteem.
- Withdrawal from society and family.
- Fear of gadgets, digital communication and social platforms.
- Avoiding work and school environments.
- Avoiding social events and gatherings.
- Losing weight or changing appearance to try and fit in;
- Inflicting self harm.
- Suicidal and violent thoughts.
- Personality shift i.e. anger, depression, crying, withdrawal
Obinna later pulled down the post but did not post an apology.
