Obinna defends politicians after Vurugu 2 chaos, reveals what really happened

Media personality and Comedian Oga Obinna has defended politicians who attended the Vurugu 2 boxing event, which saw them briefly asked to leave the venue after crowd disruptions forced organisers to intervene, saying they were not responsible for the chaos that unfolded at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi.

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Obinna said Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, conducted themselves appropriately despite being caught up in the disruption.

According to Obinna, none of the leaders insulted attendees or contributed to the tension that unfolded inside the venue.

“There’s no point where Babu insulted anybody, there’s no point where Orengo insulted anybody, there’s no point where Jalas insulted anybody, but the goons were insulting each other,” he said.

He explained that the disagreement came from rival groups within the crowd, rather than from the politicians themselves.

Obinna added that while some attendees directed chants and remarks at the leaders, the politicians largely remained calm as organisers sought to restore order.

Crowd tensions explained

The organiser said he was forced to step in after the atmosphere inside the arena became increasingly tense, with chants from sections of the crowd disrupting proceedings.

According to Obinna, he initially suggested that the politicians temporarily leave the arena to help ease the situation.

“I said, you’re my man, Orengo, you’re my dad. Jalas, you’re my man. Let’s leave,” he recalled.

However, he said the leaders initially refused to leave as organisers tried to calm the situation.

“They refused to leave,” he said.

Eventually, after continued efforts by organisers, order was restored, and the event proceeded.

Obinna maintained that the disruption was largely driven by rival groups within the crowd exchanging insults rather than any actions by the politicians.

Future plans considered

Following the incident, Obinna said he is reconsidering how politicians will be accommodated at future editions of the event.

He revealed that organisers may either bar politicians from attending altogether or impose stricter rules on the number of security officers accompanying them.

“Either if I do another one, I’ll say no politicians. Or if they come, no politician is going to enter the arena with more than three security,” he said.

Obinna also admitted that organisers underestimated some of the security challenges that emerged during the event.
