Barack and Michelle Obama are celebrating their 33rd wedding anniversary. The former US President and First Lady marked the special day on Friday, October 3, 2025, sharing warm and loving messages for each other on social media.

Taking to their respective Instagram pages on Friday, October 3, 2025, the former US President and First Lady commemorated the special day on Friday, October 3, 2025, with warm tributes.

Barack Obama reflected on their journey together, describing marrying Michelle as the best decision he ever made. He praised her strength, grace, and determination, highlighting how she has inspired him throughout their life together.

“The best decision I ever made was marrying you, @MichelleObama. For 33 years, I’ve admired your strength, grace, and determination, and the fact that you look so good doing it all. Happy anniversary!” he wrote.

Michelle Obama shared an equally heartfelt message, expressing that their 33-year journey has only deepened her love for her husband. She spoke fondly of the years they had spent.

“We’ve been on quite the journey over the last 33 years, and yet, I love you even more today than the day we said ‘I do,’” she said.

Divorce rumours

Their wedding anniversary comes only a few months after Michelle addressed rumours that they were headed for a divorce. The speculation started when Michelle missed several important public events that Barack attended alone, including former US President Donald Trump’s inauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

In an interview on the Work in Progress podcast hosted by actress Sophia Bush, Michelle denied the rumours. She explained that her absence from some events was not because of marital issues but because she needed to take care of her own well-being.

“That’s the thing that we as women, I think, we struggle with, like disappointing people,” she said.

“I mean, so much so that this year people couldn’t even fathom that I was choosing myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing. This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right? But that’s what society does to us,” she added.

Michelle said that sometimes she feels guilty for stepping back from certain duties, admitting that women often face pressure to meet the expectations of others. However, she made it clear that she continues to focus on work that truly matters to her, including giving speeches, leading global projects and championing causes such as girls’ education.

Barack responded to the speculation with humour, saying that he often does not even realise such rumours are spreading until someone tells him.

“These are the kinds of things that I just miss, so I do not even know this stuff’s going on, and then somebody will mention it to me and I’m like, what are you talking about?” he said.

The Obamas’ love story

Barack and Michelle’s love story began in 1989 in Chicago. At the time, Michelle was working as a lawyer at a law firm where Barack joined as a summer associate. Their friendship grew into a relationship, and three years later, on October 3, 1992, they tied the knot in the same state where they first met.

Over the years, they have built a strong family together. The couple has two daughters, Malia and Sasha, who grew up in the public eye during Barack Obama’s presidency.

Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017, becoming the first African-American to hold the office. During her time as First Lady, Michelle Obama led several impactful initiatives, including the widely praised “Let’s Move!” campaign, which encouraged families and children to adopt healthier lifestyles.
