Odds are that over the last two decades you have probably watched a movie or series produced by Tyler Perry.
Perry is widely known for his Madea character, an elderly African-American woman who straddles her family like a colossus helping kin to navigate life through sheer hard work, discipline, and lots of love.
In the recent past, he has produced a plethora of television series, including Sistas, For Better or Worse, If Loving You is Wrong, and Haves and Have Nots.
In 2015, the avid producer bought 330 acres of land for $30 million that formerly housed Fort McPherson Army base and has since spent $250 million building a studio operation.
The studio is more than twice the size of the world-renowned Warner Bros operation in California.
Therefore, it barely came as a surprise when on September 1, 2020, Forbes confirmed Perry as the newest Holywood billionaire, ranking him among the richest entertainers in the world.
According to Forbes, the actor cum producer is now worth US$1 billion with assets, including US$300 million in cash and investments, and his individually owned content library values at $320 million. When his multiple personal properties were added to the asset mix, Perry easily joined the Three Comma Club.
He now joins the list of richest world entertainers, including George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and John de Mol.
George Lucas is worth US$5.7 billion is widely known for his Star Wars enterprise which he sold to Disney for US$4.1 billion in cash and stock.
Spielberg and Oprah are worth US$3.7 billion and US$2.5 billion respectively and don’t need much introduction to television and movie audiences in Africa, or anywhere else in the world.
John de Mol, while not popularly known in Africa, his shows are household names. He is the man behind Big Brother, Fear Factor and Deal or No deal. He is worth US$1.9 billion.
